Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi, protesting mob attacks at different book fairs and cultural events, urged the interim government to ensure that no new fascist forces emerge undermining the spirit of the student-led mass uprising of 2024.
On Friday noon, Udichi activists from across Dhaka gathered at a protest rally in front of the National Press Club and condemned the vandalism and burning of banners at Udichi’s stall at a Satkhira Book Fair, the attack on the ‘Sabyasachi’ stall at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair in Dhaka and the cancellation of the Lalon memorial festival in Tangail due to opposition from Hefazat-e-Islam, said a press release.
Udichi Central Committee vice-president Mahmud Selim chaired the rally.
Other speakers at the event complained that a certain group was systematically destroying Bangladesh’s history, heritage, arts and culture.
They also protested against the recent attacks on shrines, religious places of worship and folk cultural events.
Additionally, they condemned the government’s move to pass a repressive new law under the guise of the Cyber Security Ordinance.
They also criticised government-affiliated individuals for making statements against the constitution, national anthem, national flag and the glorious symbols of the Independence War 1971.
Following the rally, a protest march started from Udichi Central office premises at the Topkhana Road. It passed through Purana Paltan intersection and concluded in front of the National Press Club, the press release said.
