An upazila land official in Rajshahi filed a case against two people, including Musfika Akter Mim, wife of customs excise and VAT commissionerate, Khulna’s deputy commissioner Md Abul Kalam Azad, for illegally excavating a pond on triple cropping land.

Abu Bakar Siddik, union land sub-assistant officer at Charghat upazila land office, filed the case against Musfika and pond excavator Habibur Rahman with Charghat model police station in the district on Tuesday, said the police station officer-in-charge Afzal Hossain.

According to the police and land officials, Musfika purchased the 8.5 bigha land for around Tk 70 lakh from three brothers – Rakibul Islam, Raju Ahmed and Sanju Ali in 2018.

At the time of purchase, the land had a mango orchard. However, the orchard has recently been cleared.

Musfika contracted Habibur from the neighbouring Bagha upazila to excavate a pond on the land, and the latter started digging using machines on January 20 and sold the soil to a nearby brick kiln, they said.

Following complaints from the local people, Charghat upazila assistant commissioner for land, Arif Hossain, conducted a raid on January 25, halted excavation work.

Arif Hossain said that although they stopped the excavation work at daytime and sent repeated officials’ notices to keep the work suspended, the accused continued excavation work at night.

‘Since we have failed to prevent them from continuing their excavation work and it is not possible for us to conduct a mobile court at midnight, we have lodged the case with the local police station,’ he added.

Deputy commissioner Md Abul Kalam Azad, however, could not be reached for his comment despite repeated attempts over the phone.

Meanwhile, Md Abul Kalam Azad told a local newspaper that his wife did not buy the land but inherited it through her father. Rakibul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they sold the 8.5 bigha land to the deputy commissioner’s wife for around Tk 70 lakh in 2018.
