Jahangirnagar University students demonstrated on the campus on Saturday, demanding the immediate announcement of election schedule for for Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union.

The demonstration came in response to the administration’s failure to declare the schedule by February 1, despite previously committing to a road map.

The protesters marched through the university, chanting slogans and voicing their frustration over the delay.

Convener of the JU chapter of students against discrimination platform, Arifuzzaman Uzzal, said, ‘We have been waiting for the elections as per the road map, but the administration has not kept its words.’

The protesters urged the authorities to ensure a swift and transparent election process without further postponement.

They also protested at an alleged intervention of some former students aligned with the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal in prolonging the JUCSU election process.

Earlier at noon on the day, the JU unit of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal staged a sit-in in front of the university’s administrative building, calling for reforms of the JUCSU constitution before the elections.

JCD leaders argued that the existing framework no longer met students’ evolving needs and proposed the inclusion of a women affairs secretary and an international affairs secretary in the JUCSU body.

‘We need a comprehensive dialogue to address these concerns before moving forward with the elections,’ said Akramul Haque, a member of the JU JCD convening committee.

Earlier on December 30, JU administration unveiled a road map for the JUCSU election, where it committed to publish the election schedule by February 1, 2025.
