The students of Government Brojomohun College in Barishal blocked the Barishal-Patuakhali Highway protesting at assault and attack on students on Tuesday.

The agitated students vandalised a bus and suspended traffic movement on the highway for over three hours until 9:30pm, causing suffering to the commuters.

The students withdrew the blockade after the authority promised to ensure justice for the students.

The students alleged that the trouble began in the afternoon when a student of  BM College requested a bus helper to allow half fares on the Barishal-Jhalakati route.

The bus driver and his assistant allegedly misbehaved with the student, sparking protests.

The BM College students later went to the bus association office for justice where the transport workers attacked on them.

In protest, the students blocked the highway to press their demands including punishment of the accused, route permit cancellation of the bus and half fares for students in all public buses.

Kotwali Model Police Station officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman said that police were deployed at the terminal to control the situation, reports UNB.

A student of the college Sabbir Ahmed said that students were holding a peaceful demonstration, but the workers chased them with sticks and sharp weapons and three students were injured.

Rupatali Bus Owners’ Association president Zia Uddin Sikder condemned the incident.

‘If the students hadn’t resorted to violence and vandalism, we could have resolved the matter through appropriate measures,’ he said.
