A group of angry people, who crowded at Rajshahi Railway Station on Tuesday morning after failing to travel to their designated places, vandalised some chairs and tables at the rail station.

Witnesses said that about three hundred people who bought train tickets earlier to travel to their designated places gathered at Rajshahi Rail Station in the morning.

Since no train departed from Rajshahi due to the countrywide indefinite strike enforced by railway running staff members since Tuesday morning, a group of angry youths equipped with sticks overturned the chairs placed at the railway station for the passengers to rest.

Later, they entered one of the rooms used by traveling ticket examiners and broke chairs and glasses placed on two tables inside the room.

On information, members of the Army rushed into the spot and brought the situation under control, witnesses said.

After Rajshahi railway station manager Moyeen Uddin had announced on the megaphone that they would refund the money of the train tickets, waiting passengers collected the money from the ticket counters and left the station.

Moyeen Uddin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that none of the six trains scheduled to depart for various destinations between dawn and 9:00am departed from Rajshahi on Tuesday morning due to the strike.

Meanwhile, passengers who bought tickets earlier suffered immensely due to the strike.

Mozzammel Haque, who bought tickets for Madhumati Express Train on Wednesday night, said that he along with five of his family members came to Rajshahi on Wednesday to visit a doctor.

‘After coming to the railway station in the morning, I came to know that the train services have been suspended following railway staff strike’, he said, adding that he had to reach his home now in an alternative way.

Meanwhile, in an urgent message, the public relations officer of the ministry Rezaul Karim Siddique said that they had introduced BRTC bus services following the work abstention of the running staff so that the rail passengers could travel from Dhaka Kamalapur and airport stations to Chattogram, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Khulna, Cumilla, Bogura and Mymensingh with train tickets and travel from there to Dhaka.

Muhammad Shuvo, counter master at Rajshahi BRTC Bus Depot, said that they were not informed anything about the introduction of a bus service between Rajshahi-Dhaka till 12:00pm.
