A youth was detained from Jahangirnagar University’s Nawab Faizunnesa Hall early Sunday by the authorities of the female hall of residence.
The detained, Ashraful Alam Parvez, also known as Jajabar Parvez, entered the hall allegedly with the assistance of Arpa Khandakar Chandni, a student of the university’s 52nd batch in the drama and dramatics department at the university.
Parvez, originally hailed from Chattogram but residing in Gazipur, claimed he came to JU to attend its winter festival.Ìý
Witnesses reported that Arpa assisted Parvez in getting into the hall disguising him as a female with a shawl.Ìý
His attire and behaviour aroused suspicion of the students, who immediately informed the hall superintendent.
The hall administration detained Parvez from Room 316, allotted to Arpa, and called Ashulia police station.Ìý
Arpa admitted to bringing Parvez to the hall, saying that he has no place to stay.
Hall superintendent Nadia Sultana said, ‘We found the outsider in the room after being informed of suspicious activity near the hall’s washroom.’
JU proctor professor AKM Rashidul Alam said, ‘A committee will investigate the matter, and appropriate actions will be taken.’
The university students, meanwhile, brought out a protest procession on the campus early Sunday demanding punishment for Arpa and tightening security to the female residence halls.Ìý
The JU authorities later on the day suspended Arpa Khandaker for allowing outsider Parvez to the female hall.
The decision was taken following the Student Discipline Ordinance 2018 of the university, said a JU notice on Sunday night.
According to the notice, disguised in women’s clothing, Parvez entered Room 316 at the hall, raising suspicions among students.
