A youth was killed in a landslide while he was extracting stone digging earth at Companiganj upazila in Sylhet on Monday morning.
The deceased is Litan Ahmed, 30, son of Nabi Hossain of Bagharpar village at the upazila in the district, police said.
Local residents said that Litan along with six other day labourers was extracting underground stones through digging a hole in the Bholaganj Ropeway area under the Companiganj upazila.
At one stage, a huge chunk of earth and stone suddenly dropped on Litan from above at around 9:00am, leaving him buried beneath the earth, they said.
Companiganj police officer-in-charge Uzayer Al Mahmud Adnan said that the other labourers working with Litan rescued him from the spot in a critical condition immediately after the incident and he died on his way to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
‘The body was sent to the SOMCH morgue for a post-mortem examination,’ the police officer said, adding that legal action will be taken in this regard after receiving a written complaint from the victim’s family.
