The Rajshahi University authorities on Sunday on Sunday formed a nine-member committee, led by pro-vice-chancellor professor Farid Uddin Khan to investigate into the incident of finding four partially burnt copies of the Qur’an from different residential halls on the day.

The committee has been instructed to submit its findings within three days, RU vice-chancellor professor Saleh Hasan Naqib said.

The burnt copies were found at the Muktamanch of Syed Ameer Ali Hall, the shelves of mosques in Shaheed Habibur Rahman and Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Halls, and the rooftop of Motihar Hall.

Additionally, a lotus symbol, associated with India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, was discovered drawn on a wall in the Ziaur Rahman Hall.

In response to the incidents, hundreds of students staged a campus-wide protest, expressing their outrage over the desecration of the Qur’ans.

After visiting the sites, RU VC Professor Saleh Hasan Naqib condemned the incidents, describing them as a calculated attempt to disrupt communal harmony.

He said that a group of miscreants might have burned the copies of Qur’an in the dark of night with the intention of destroying the glorious communal harmony among people of various religions.

‘This appears to be a premeditated act, as the incidents occurred simultaneously across multiple halls with a similar pattern. It is a vile and reprehensible act,’ professor Naqib added.
