An Awami League leader was allegedly hacked by fellow activists at Charghat upazila in Rajshahi on Thursday afternoon.
The victim is Tozammel Haque Tazmul, 55, general secretary of Charghat Sadar Union AL Ward 9. He is undergoing treatment at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation.
According to police and local people, there had been a long-standing dispute between Tazmul and his neighbours Mamun, Sumon and Sujon – three brothers – over land.
Following the dispute, the trio brothers blocked the path of Tazmul on the Charghat-Bagha regional highway in the Hajirdhalan area while he was heading to Rawtha Bazar from Kakramari Bazar on Thursday afternoon.
At one stage of the altercation, the trio brothers hacked Tazmul with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured, witnesses said.
On information, family members took Tazmul to Charghat Upazila Health Complex from where he was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
As Tazmul’s condition deteriorated, RMCH doctors referred him to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation at night.
Afzal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Charghat model police station, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Tazmul and the trio brothers who hacked him were neighbours and linked to Awami league.
‘The attack was carried out after Tazmul had threatened the trio brothers over a family dispute centring land,’ he said, adding that none lodge any written complaint with the police station until Friday evening.
The police official said that they were trying to arrest the trio brothers as they went into hiding following the incident.
