The makeshift courtroom, established in 2013 to try members of the Bangladesh Rifles involved in the February 2009 BDR headquarters carnage, was set ablaze late last night on Wednesday within the Alia Madrasa compound.

The arson is believed to have been triggered by growing demands to relocate the court from the madrasa premises.

The incident followed the government鈥檚 recent reversal of its decision to hold trial sessions at the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, instead opting to continue proceedings at the madrasa compound.

The unrest escalated when madrasa students seized control of the court compound early in the morning. Law enforcement agencies, reinforced by army personnel, arrived later to disperse the protesters and secure the area. By 10:35am, the site was cleared for judges and lawyers to inspect the damage.

Authorities have yet to announce whether trial sessions will resume at the compound.

Investigations are under way to determine those responsible for the arson, while security around the premises has been significantly tightened.
