Former officer-in-charge of Kotwali police in Chattogram Md Nezam Uddin, who is now serving as an inspector in Cumilla, was assaulted allegedly by activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The attackers later handed him over to the police, the police said.

The incident took place on Monday at around 2:30pm in front of the regional passport office in the Panchlaish area of the city, said Panchlaish police OC Md Solaiman.

BNP leaders and activists besieged the Panchlaish police station, demanding the arrest of police officer Nejam Uddin, OC Solaiman said, adding that they staged demonstrations there, calling for justice.

A video circulated on social media showed activists of the BNP grabbed Nezam Uddin by his shirt collar and dragged him.

The video also showed that several individuals were physically assaulting the officer.

According to local people and police, on Monday afternoon, police inspector Nezam Uddin went to pick up his son from a school in the Panchlaish residential area.

As he was getting out of his car in front of the passport office, activists of the BNP’s Swechchhasebak Dal, led by Shaheedul Islam Shaheed, general secretary to the Swechchhasebak Dal of the Chakbazar area, surrounded him, citing past grievances of alleged abuse during his tenure as OC.

Later, they physically assaulted him, tore his shirt, and expressed anger over alleged mistreatment they had faced under his jurisdiction.

OC Solaiman said, ‘On information, police rushed to the scene and took him into custody. He is currently at the police station.’

The OC confirmed that no case was filed against Nejam Uddin.

Md Nezam Uddin previously served as OC of Kotwali, Bakalia, and Sadarghat police stations under Chattogram Metropolitan Police.

He has recently been posted as the OC to the Patiya police station in Chattogram before being transferred to Comilla, where he now serves as an inspector in the Criminal Investigation Department.
