The Jahangirnagar University campus was abuzz with bird enthusiasts at the weekend on Friday as it hosted its annual bird fair aimed at creating environmental awareness.
The event organised by the zoology department of the university and nature conservation groups attracted hundreds of birdwatchers, researchers, students, and local residents.
The university vice-chancellor, professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, inaugurated the event this morning on the premises of the university’s Zahir Raihan auditorium.
‘Jahangirnagar University has always been a sanctuary for both migratory and native birds. Hosting this fair is not just a tradition but a commitment to fostering awareness and action for bird conservation,’ he said.
The day-long event featured birdwatching sessions, photography exhibitions, and expert talks.
Visitors also had the opportunity to participate in quizzes, art competitions, and guided nature walks around JU’s lush campus, renowned as a haven for migratory and native birds.
‘This fair is a wonderful platform to educate people about the threats facing bird populations, such as habitat destruction and climate change’, said professor Kamrul Hasan, a leading ornithologist and convener of the event.
One of the fair’s main attractions was a photography competition showcasing stunning images of birds captured by both amateur and professional photographers.
Visitors were particularly moved by the perspective of Sabbir Imam Khan, a school teacher from the Savar area near the capital.
‘Events like this remind us of our responsibility to protect their habitats. I have brought my students here so that they can see the beauty of nature and be inspired to care about it,’ Sabbir said.
Awards in different categories including Big Bird Bangladesh, Scientific Publication Award, Conservation Media Award and Special Recognition Award 2025 were also given at the event on the basis of the individuals’ role in conserving birds.
