The Sylhet District Bus-Minibus Coach-Microbus Workers Union called off their work abstention Tuesday evening after assurances from the district administration to ensure their security and arrest those responsible for torching a bus on Sunday.
Sylhet deputy commissioner Mohammed Sher Mahbub Murad confirmed that union leaders agreed to postpone their protest during a meeting at the district administration office.
General secretary of the union Abdul Muhith said that if their demands were not met within the shortest period of time, they might resume their action.
The union had announced an indefinite work abstention from Tuesday to protest at the bus torching by local residents on the Sylhet-Zakiganj road.
Commuters in four upazilas of Sylhet鈥擹akiganj, Beanibazar, Kanaighat, and Golapganj鈥攆aced severe difficulties as no buses, microbuses, or minibuses operated throughout the day.
District secretary of the union Muhith said that on Sunday, a group of teenagers was playing football near the Sylhet-Zakiganj road in Kamalganj when a ball rolled onto the road. A Class IX student, chasing the ball, was fatally struck by a bus.
In retaliation, local residents set the bus on fire and vandalised three others on the route. The driver of the torched bus filed a complaint with Zakiganj police station against more than 50 individuals.
