
People welcomed 2025 on Tuesday night amid restrictions on outdoor celebrations in the capital and elsewhere across the country, bidding farewell to the outgoing year with fresh hopes and apprehensions.
The interim government chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, in a message on Tuesday greeted the nation on the eve of the New Year.
In his message, the chief adviser expressed the interim government’s determination to continue upholding the freedom hard won against fascism through the July-August mass uprising.
He said that the government was committed to face all the challenges and explore new possibilities to climb new heights of development.
‘May the bond of harmony, friendship and brotherhood among people become stronger in the new year. May this year bring endless happiness, peace and prosperity in everyone’s life,’ he said.
Meanwhile, the police have beefed up security measures at checkpoints in the capital from Tuesday evening.
To raise awareness, the fire service department shared leaflets on their official Facebook page urging people to avoid fireworks, crackers and sound pollution.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police imposed restrictions on outdoor events, fireworks, crackers and lanterns, while restricting public movements and enforcing security measures to avoid any untoward incidents around New Year celebrations.
‘Do not cause trouble to the common people by bursting fireworks, rocket bombs, and crackers during the New Year celebration. Don’t cause trouble to those who are taking treatment in hospitals,’ DMP commissioner SM Sajjat Ali said on Tuesday at a press briefing.
He said that they had already started taking various preventive measures.
‘We have been conducting operations to stop chocolate bombs, fireworks, rocket bombs, and crackers. In the meantime, legal action has been taken against five people after 172kg of fireworks and explosives were recovered from them,’ he added.
Adequate police personnel in uniform and plainclothes would be deployed to ensure security on the eve of the New Year and check-posts would be set up in different parts of the city, he said.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police in a directive also instructed the licensed bars in the capital to remain closed from 6:00pm on December 31 till Wednesday.
None would be allowed to hold any outdoor programmes such as concerts and dance events. Parties and crackers, fireworks or sky lanterns would also be banned on the 31st night, the directive read.
Carrying firearms at residential hotels, public places and restaurants from Tuesday 6:00pm till Wednesday 5:00am was also banned.
The police also placed restrictions on public movements in places, including Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara from Tuesday 8:00pm where entry of outsiders would be particularly restricted with residents of these areas being asked to use Amtali and Kakali crossings for entry.
No outsiders and vehicles will be allowed in the Dhaka University area after 6:00pm Tuesday. Students can enter the university area through Nilkhet and Shahbagh entry points by showing their identity cards.
Dhaka University administration imposed restrictions on several campus entry points from 7:00pm on Tuesday to 5:00am on Wednesday.
Additionally, no events, fireworks and sky lanterns will be permitted in open spaces on the university premises, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent for Dhaka University reported.
The Rapid Action Battalion also have increased surveillance and security patrols at important venues across the country since December 30, said a RAB press release.Â
The force called on people not to explode firecrackers, do fireworks and other use fire-powered lanterns.Â
City dwellers, however, greeted 2025 by lighting firecrackers and scaled-down parties.
