The victim, Ziauddin Palash, 45, is the general secretary of Nawapara Municipality’s ward number 4 unit of the AL and a former councilor of the ward.

Local people, immediately after the incident, caught BNP activist Rias Uddin on the spot for his alleged involvement in the killing and gave him a good beating before the police rescued Rias at about 10:00pm on Saturday, said police.

Abhaynagar police station officer-in-charge Emadul Karim said that they heard the news at about 9:30pm and reached the spot within 20 minutes.

‘When police reached the spot, local people fled the scene leaving Rias injured. We have detained Rias,’ the OC said and added that the victim was taken to the Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex where duty doctors declared him dead.

Jashore district superintendent of police Ziauddin Ahmed told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they came to know that the victim and Rais had enmity over a tender for taking a jetty on lease.

‘We have heard from one or two people that Raisuddin is involved in BNP politics…He is a fertiliser trader,’ the SP added.

Md Lelin, a younger brother of the victim, told reporters that a group of miscreants killed his brother after abducting him.

The victim’s father Ibrahim Biswas, who was also a ward commissioner, was shot dead by unidentified miscreants a few years ago.
