A third-year student of Jahangirnagar University began a hunger strike on Sunday, demanding the immediate arrest of the identified attackers involved in the July-August student-led mass uprising, which led to the resignation and flight of Sheikh Hasina on August 5.

Zia Uddin Ayan, a student of the government and politics department, started his protest in front of the university’s new administrative building at about 11:00am to press home his two-point demands.

His another demand was the immediate activation of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union.

‘Despite forming a probe committee in September, the administration has shown no visible progress after four months. Not even a case has been filed,’ Ayan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, explaining his decision to go on hunger strike.

He also expressed concerns for his safety, revealing that he received a death threat on December 8 due to his activism in demanding justice for the attacks.

Ayan criticised the inaction, pointing out that some perpetrators continue to attend classes and exams, emboldened by the lack of accountability.

Calling JUCSU’s activation a key demand from the July protests, Ayan emphasised the need for student representation on campus.

He vowed to continue his hunger strike until the attackers are arrested and a JUCSU election roadmap is announced.

In response, JU’s pro-vice-chancellor for administrative affairs, professor Sohel Ahmed, stated that the preliminary report on the July-August attacks would be published on January 7, followed by the final report on January 21.

A commission to oversee the JUCSU election and its roadmap would be announced on Monday, he added.

On August 5, a student-led mass uprising ousted Sheikh Hasina-led autocratic regime that forced Hasina to flee India.
