A Bangladeshi teenager was shot to death by a national of India at Jaintapur border in Sylhet on Thursday noon.

The deceased is Maruf Miah, 16, son of Shahab Uddin of Jhingabari village under the Jaintapur upazila, the Border Guard Bangladesh said.


Local residents said that several Bangladeshi teenagers, including Maruf, entered an Areca nut plantation along the border near the international pillar number 1282 in the Minatila area under Jaintapur at around 12:45pm.

But a person from Khasia tribe of Meghalaya State of India opened fire targeting the Bangladeshi teenagers without any provocation, leaving Maruf critically injured, they said.

The locals also said that the companions of Maruf recovered him from the spot in a critical condition and took him back to his home.

The victim’s family then took him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital at around 3:00pm where the doctor on duty declared him dead, they said.

BGB 48 Battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Md Hafizur Rahman confirmed the death of Maruf to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

He said that the BGB company commander of Minatila border outpost met at a flag meeting near zero line at around 4:30pm with his Indian counterpart where the BGB protested at the killing of a Bangladeshi teenager.

‘The BGB handed a protest letter in this regard to the Indian Border Security Force and demanded immediate steps to bring the killer of the Bangladeshi teenager book,’ Hafizur said.

According to human rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra, 22 Bangladeshis were shot to death by the BSF members between January and November in 2024. At least 28 Bangladeshis were shot to death by the BSF between January and December in 2023.
