DMP additional commissioner SN Md Nazrul Islam made the claim at a press briefing at the DMP media centre on Minto Road in the capital on Monday afternoon.

He said that 26 muggers were arrested in areas under Lalbagh Division, 19 in Tejgaon Division, 14 in Motijheel Division, 10 in Wari, eight in Ramna, eight in Uttara, four in Gulshan and four in Mirpur Division.

Many of them have been arrested several times before over mugging in different areas in the city, Nazrul said.

‘We are trying to identify mugging-prone areas and also those who mug in these areas. We are trying our best to bring them to book,’ the police official said.

Mentioning a recent incident where a group of youths wielded machetes in the Mohammadpur area, he revealed that police arrested four suspects in the incident.

Regular drives will be continued to prevent mugging incidents following a rise in such incidents in the city, added the police official.
