The police on Sunday night arrested the owner of a privately run students’ dormitory and his two sons on charge of assaulting and molesting a female student reportedly for protesting against low-quality food served in the dormitory in Rajshahi.
The arrested are Abdul Matin, 60, owner of Jholok-Polok Mess located at Kadirganj in Rajshahi city, and his sons Rabbul Hasan, 24, and Washik Hasan, 22.
Boalia police station officer-in-charge Mehedi Masud told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the arrested had been sent to jail after they were produced before a Rajshahi court in the case filed by the victim on Monday.
About 200 female students of Jholok-Polok Mess went to the police station with a procession, protesting against the physical assault and molestation on one of their fellow boarders by the dormitory owner’s sons.
The students said that about 300 female students were staying in the dormitory and most of them were taking preparations for vying in the upcoming university admission tests.
They alleged that the owner and his sons had confined them inside the dormitory since Sunday morning after one of their fellow boarders had protested against serving low-quality food in the morning and threatened to leave the hall permanently.
‘The owner’s sons not only barred the victim from leaving the mess permanently, but also assaulted and molested her, which enraged other students staying in the dormitory,’ said a boarder.
She said that after some boarders had informed the incident to their male friends over the phone that they had been kept confined inside the mess since morning, a group of Chhatra Dal leaders and activists went to the dormitory and freed them breaking the lock at the entrance at 11:00pm.
