
The police have arrested a ward Swechchhasebak League president, on charges of opening firing on students during an anti-discrimination protest in Chattogram’s Muradpur area.Ìý
The detained is Mithun Chakraborty, 35, a former president of the City’s Chawk Bazar ward unit of the Swechchhasebak League.
He was allegedly a close associate of Nur Mostafa Tinu, a former councilor, and a top-listed criminal.
At a press briefing held at the Chattogram Metropolitan Police headquarters on Monday, deputy commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police Raish Uddin confirmed the arrest.Ìý
DC Raish Uddin said, ‘On information, we detained him from his relative’s house on Sunday.’
The police official said that during preliminary interrogation, Mithun confessed to attacking the student protest with a firearm.
Mithun has been named in a case filed over attack on students during the July protest, Panchlaish police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Solaiman said, adding that he has been shown arrested in the case and was sent to court today.
