
Dense fog disrupted communications in different areas across the country on Sunday causing accidents on both roads and waterways in which at least one person was killed and several others were injured.
At least one person was killed and five more were injured in a collision between several vehicles on the Dhaka-Mawa expressway in Munshiganj in the morning due to fog.
In Chandpur district, at least eight passengers were injured in the early hours of Sunday after two triple-decker launches collided head-on in the River Meghna on the Barishal-Dhaka-Barishal route due to fog.Â
Ferry services on the Aricha-Kazirhat and Paturia-Daulatdia routes in Manikganj were suspended for three and half hours due to dense fog in the early hours of the day.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s weather forecast commenced at 6:00pm on Sunday, light to moderate fog may occur at places over the country during midnight till morning.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Munshiganj reported that the collision of the vehicles took place on the Singpara underpass.
The deceased is Farhad Hossain, 40, who died at Srinagar Upazila Health Complex while undergoing treatment there, confirmed complex’s emergency department physician Camellia Sarkar.
Hashara highway thana officer-in-charge Abdul Kader Jilani said that Farhad was a car driver and resident of Bhanga area in Faridpur.
The accident took place at around 7:00am when a covered van hit a car from behind due to dense fog, he said.
‘After the collision, Farhad got down from the car to see the damages while an unidentified bus hit the covered van from behind and that van hit Farhad,’ the police officer continued.
A total of seven vehicles including buses of Ena, Shakura and Golden paribahan hit the standing vehicles one by one, he said.
‘The process of filing a case is underway,’ he said, adding that in the incident drivers of four to five buses were injured.
Earlier, at around 3:30am on the day in the Hashara area a truck and car collided also without any causality, he added.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Barishal reported that the Dhaka bound MV Kirtankhola-10 and Barishal bound MV Prince Awlad-10 collided at around 2:30am at Harinaarea under Chandpur district with no major damages.Â
Mohammad Abdur Razzak, deputy director and river port officer of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, said that no one sustained serious injuries.
Mentioning that primarily it was assumed that the collision took place for dense fog, he said that the cause of the collision would be known after investigation. Later, MV Prince Awlad-10 brought to Barishal River Port through special arrangements and MV Kirtankhola-10 launch reached Dhaka in the morning, said officials.
The passengers got panicked due to loud sound and jerking during the incident.Â
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Manikganj reported that after three and half hours ferry operations on the two routes resumed at about 8:30am.
Confirming the news, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation deputy general manager of Aricha office, Nasir Chowdhury said that ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia route in the River Padma were suspended from 6:30am, while services on the Aricha-Kazirhat route were halted from 5:20am.
Three ferries—Khanjahan Ali, Keramoth Ali, and Hasnahena—were stranded mid-river during the suspension.
Additionally, seven ferries at Paturia Terminal, two at Daulatdia Terminal, and three at Aricha Terminal were halted with passengers and vehicles on board.
Over 200 vehicles were stranded at the ferry terminals, leaving passengers and transport workers to endure significant delays and discomfort amid the bitter cold.
