A Gazipur court on Friday sent Muaz Bin Noor, spokesperson for the Tabligh Jamaat faction loyal to Maulana Muhammed Saad Kandhalvi, to jail in connection with the murder case filed over the killing of four people in violent clashes over establishing control of the Ijtema ground at Tongi in Gazipur.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police (South) deputy commissioner NM Nasiruddin said that Muaz was produced before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

The hearing is scheduled to be held today and he was sent to jail, added Nasiruddin.

Muaz was arrested from a house in Dhaka’s Khilkhet area at about 1:00am on Friday, said Tongi West police station officer-in-charge Iskander Habibur Rahman.

Operation is ongoing to arrest the other accused in the case, he added.

Earlier on Thursday, a supporter of the Tabligh Jamaat faction loyal to Maulana Zubair, filed the case with the Tongi West Police against 29 persons, including Muaz, and several hundred unnamed people following the death of four people.

A clash between the two factions of the Tabligh Jamaat broke out over the control of the Ijtema ground at Tongi on Wednesday, leaving four dead and scores of others injured.

To prevent further clash, the authority imposed Section 144 on the Ijtema ground and within 3-kilometre radius of the ground, banning gatherings and asking both groups to vacate the area.

A huge contingent of security personnel had also been deployed in the area, said the local people.

Several hundred followers of Zubair, however, were staying at the Ijtema ground with the permission of authorities concerned to take care of the Ijtema ground materials, while Saad supporters left the area, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Correspondent in Gazipur on Friday.

Bishwa Ijtema, a religious congregation at which the highest number of Muslims gather after Hajj, is organised annually at Tongi on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Recent years have seen growing rifts between the two clerics — Maulana Saad and Maulana Zubair — culminating first in a 2018 deadly clash over the control of the Ijtema ground, killing a man and injuring more than 200 others.

Since the clash, the congregation has been organised separately by the two groups.

As per a decision mediated by the then government, the first phase of the Biswa Ijtema, organised by Zubair followers, is scheduled for January 31 to February 2, while the second phase, led by Saad followers, is scheduled for February 7-9.

Traditionally, before the final Ijtema they hold a five-day preparatory gathering.

The Zubair group held their preparatory congregation between November 29 and December 3 this year.
