Rights campaigners at a meeting with the labour reform commission on Tuesday highlighted the importance of maternity leave for women workers, sufficient day-care facilities for working women and strict measures against sexual harassment.

The labour reform commission chief, Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed, chaired the meeting held at Shrama Bhaban in the capital Dhaka.

Sultan Uddin urged citizens to submit their written opinions to the commission by December 30.

Citing inadequate implementation of right-based laws in the country, the campaigners also demanded that the reform commission prioritise the assurance of justice for workers, occupational health and safety and establishment of rights for sex workers and the creation of a database for informal workers.

Seema Das Shimu from Narigrantha Prabartana, Rebeka Neela from Nari Samhati, Sanjida Lipi from Democracy Watch, and Kohinoor Mahmud and Nazma Akter from the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies, among others, were present, said a press release.

Trade union activist Kohinoor said, ‘The commission’s recommendations should not remain only on paper. It is the government’s responsibility to implement the recommendations.’

Bangladesh Socialist Workers Front president Razequzzaman Ratan said, ‘Implementation of the recommendations would depend on the strength of workers’ collective movement.’

Commission members Mahfuzul Haque, Shakil Akhtar Chowdhury, Taslima Akhter, AKM. Nasim, Chowdhury Ashikul Alam and Razequzzaman Ratan and Ananya Raihan Ariful Islam were also present.
