The eight-month-old girl abducted from Azimpur in the capital during a robbery on Friday was rescued from a house in the Mohammadpur area on Saturday.

A team of the Rapid Action Battalion rescued the girl at about 1:30am and arrested the prime suspect in the robbery and abduction at the same house in Mohammadpur’s Nabinagar Housing area.

RAB media wing director Lieutenant Colonel Md Munim Ferdous at a press briefing at its media centre at Karwan Bazar on Saturday afternoon identified the arrested as Fatema Akhtar Shapla, 27.

Primary investigation revealed that Shapla, along with her accomplices Sumon, Raihan, and Hasan, planned the robbery and abduction, said RAB director Munin.

‘Shapla tried to gain trust of Farzana by sharing her financial struggle. Farzana believed her and decided to sublet part of her house to Shapla,’ Munim said.

On Friday, the male trio entered Farzana’s residence after Shapla had opened the door to the residence.

The three people then looted gold ornaments and cash, and left with the baby.

Farzana Akhtar, a Ministry of Home Affairs employee, lived with her baby in her rented house in Azimpur’s Lalbagh Tower area. Farzana was separated from her husband Abu Zafar.

At the press briefing, Munim Ferdous said that the baby’s father Abu Zafar was also under surveillance as part of the investigation.

Investigation was going on to arrest the other persons involved in the incident, added the RAB official.
