Over a dozen of people sustained gunshot wounds after a group of masked assailants opened fire on people at Raujan upazila in Chattogram.

The shooting took place at about 10:30pm on Thursday in the Asad Ali Matbarpara Mosque area of 鈥嬧婲iramishpara village, said Mir Mahabubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Raujan police station.


The police said that of the injured, 11 were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital with gunshot wounds, while others were undergoing treatment at different private hospitals.聽

Those receiving treatment at the CMCH are Md Jasim Uddin, 50, Md Mohiuddin, 38, Jane Alam, 44, Md Saifuddin, 31, Md Lavlu, 28, Nuruddin, 28, Md Manik, 36, Md Masud, 35, Alauddin, 40, Md Humayun, 45, and Nurul Absar, 55, all residents of Niramishpara village. The identities of those treated at private facilities could not be known.聽

According to witnesses, the violence began at around 9:00pm when a group of 20 to 25 masked individuals beat and stabbed Md Mohiuddin near the mosque. As locals intervened, the attackers reportedly opened fire indiscriminately, leaving those injured.聽

The police said that the incident stemmed from a rivalry between two factions of the local unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Earlier, clashes took place in the area over establishing political dominance, the police added.聽

OC Mir Mahabubur Rahman said, 鈥楢round 20 to 25 men from one BNP faction attacked Kamal Uddin, son of former Noapara union parishad chairman Khayez Ahmed.

When locals resisted, the attackers fired indiscriminately, injuring 12 to 15 people.鈥澛

No case has been filed so far, and the police are investigating the incident, OC added.
