
Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested 10 people along with the United States’ newly elected president Donald Trump’s posters, banners and placards conducting drives in different areas in the capital on Saturday.
Confirming the matter to media, DMP deputy commissioner for media and public relations Muhammad Talebur Rahman said that some people were taking preparation for an illegal procession with the US flag and the country’s newly elected president Trump’s posters and photos following AL president Sheikh Hasina’s directives in a recently viral audio clip.
Awami League president and Bangladesh’s ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post of prime minister and fled to India on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.
‘The arrested had a plan to vandalise photos and posters for creating an unstable situation,’ he said, adding that the move was taken to destroy Bangladesh’s relationship with the United States.
He said that they had also recovered some money in cash from the arrested people.
Students, mass people, activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its wing organisations on Saturday night brought out processions and held short rallies across Dhaka city protesting against Awami League for the party’s announcement to bring out procession marking Noor Hossain Day.
Noor Hossain Day will be observed today (Sunday, November 20, 2024) commemorating the sacrifice of the young campaigner for democracy Noor Hossain, a driver, who was gunned down by the police at Zero Point in Dhaka on November 10 in 1987 while attending a demonstration against the autocratic ruler HM Ershad.
BNP’s student wing and youth wing brought out processions vowing to resist Awami League at different places in Dhaka city, including Kalyanpur, Green Road and Kalabagan areas.
A tense situation was prevailing in front of the AL central office at Bangabandhu Avenue as two alleged Awami League supporters were beaten up by the BNP activists and later they were handed over to the police.
