A youth with mental disability was strangled to death by unidentified assailants on his way home from a waj mahfil, an Islamic seminar, under Ataikula police station of Pabna sadar upazila.
The deceased was Asif, 32, son of Aslam Kasai of Pirpur area of Ataikula in the upazila. His genitals also were found cut off.
Locals found his body on the west side of Akiz Jute Mill in Gangarampur at around 8:00am on Friday and police were informed. The police recovered the body around 11:00am.
Police quoted locals as saying that Asif got married to a girl who lived with his uncle’s family in Gangarampur area about four years ago, but they got divorced later.
Asif returned home from Pabna Mental Hospital four months ago after receiving treatment, family said.
They said Asif went to a waj mahfil in the area on Thursday. He went to his ex-wife’s uncle’s house on his way back from the mahfil.
From there, the relatives informed Asif’s family of his arrival. But the next morning news of his strangled body was received.
The victim’s brother Nirob said that his brother was murdered in a premeditated manner. He demanded the immediate arrest of the killers and bring them to justice.
Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ataikula police station said that ‘We rushed to the scene after receiving the information. ‘Superintendent of police Md Mortoza Ali Khan and Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md Mahfuz Hossain visited the scene.
The body was recovered and sent to the Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy. The exact cause of the murder is still unknown. Police are working to unearth the mystery.
