Sachin Dev Burman

Today is the 49th anniversary of the death of legendary singer and music director Sachin Dev Burman.

Born in 1906 in Cumilla, SD Burman took his formal education in music under musician KC Dey. He later learnt music under Bhismadev Chattopadhaya, Ustad Badal Khan and Ustad Allauddin Khan.


He started his carrier through Bengali films in 1937. He moved to Mumbai on the request of Sashadhar Mukharjee in 1940.

Prominent singers of the Indian subcontinent like Lata Mangeskhar, Mohammad Rafi, Geeta Dutta, Manna Dey, Asha Bosle, Mukesh and Talat Mahmud have lent their voices to playbacks composed by Sachin Dev.

He composed playbacks for evergreen Indian films like ‘Matir Ghar’, ‘Shikari’, ‘Dil Ki Rani’, ‘Miss India’, ‘Tere Ghar Ke Samne’, ‘Kaise Kahoon’, ‘Jayati’ and ‘Prem Pujari’.

He received Filmfare Best Music Director Award, Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Asia Film Society Award and Padma Shri Award.

Sachin Dev Burman passed away on October 31, 1975.
