Two district judges have recently joined the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal under the Department of Internal Resources as members its members.

The appointed judges are Mohammad Samshul Haque and Mohammad Anisur Rahman, according to a press release issued by the National Board of Revenue on Tuesday.

Mohammad Samshul Haque joined the Bangladesh judicial service through the 22nd Bangladesh Civil Service, and Mohammad Anisur Rahman joined the service through the 24th BCS.

Although there is a provision for appointing working and retired tax commissioners, district judges, chartered accountants, and professionals from several other sectors as members of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, only working tax commissioners have been performing this duty for a long period.

No judicial officer has been appointed to the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal after the financial year 2013-2014 until this latest development, the press release said.

Taxpayers have been demanding appointing professionals from outside the tax cadre as members of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal as per the Income Tax Act for a long time, according to the press release.

The press release added that these appointments would make the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal work more efficiently, boost taxpayers’ trust in the Income Tax Department, and help improve the country’s revenue collection.
