
The authorities of Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh have suspended eight students temporarily over the lynching of a former student on the campus on Wednesday night.
The deceased Shamim Molla, 35, of history department was a former organising secretary of JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League—the student wing of Awami League.
A JU notice signed by registrar ABM Azizur Rahman confirmed the suspension order on Thursday.
The authorities took the decision of suspending the eight following the preliminary investigation report of the university’s proctorial body, according to the notice.
The notice also stated that the proctorial body considered video footages and photographs to confirm the eight students’ direct role in beating Shamim Molla.
The suspended students are, Mohammad Rajon Mia and Raju Ahmed of the government and politics, Mahmudul Hasan Rayhan and Hamidullah Salman of the English, Jubayer Ahmed of the history, Ahsan Labib of the biotechnology and genetic engineering, and Atikuzzaman Atik of the management studies department of the university.
Meanwhile, the university administration also formed a five member probe body to investigate the death of Shamim.
Professor Swadhin Sen of the archaeology department named chairman while deputy registrar Lutfor Rahman Arif named as member secretary of the committee.
Other members of the committee are, Muhammad Tareq Chowdhury of the philosophy, Professor Emran Jahan and Professor Aniccha Parvin of the history department.
The committee was directed to submit their report within the next 30 days, JU registrar ABM Azizur Rahman said.
Earlier on Wednesday night, former student Shamim Molla was beaten to death by a group of students on the campus, escalating a series of protests from teachers and students.
