A Rajshahi court on Sunday placed an activist of Jubo League, the youth wing of the Awami League, on five-day remand in police custody in a case filed in connection with killing of an Islami Chhatra Shibir leader in Rajshahi on August 5.
Judge Faisal Tarek of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 passed the order against JL activist Jahirul Islam Rubel after the Boalia model police produced him before the court in the morning seeking 10-day remand for him.
SM Masud Pervez, officer-in-charge of the Boalia model police station, said that members of the Rapid Action Battalion arrested Rubel at Cumilla’s Daudkandi and brought him to Rajshahi on Saturday night.
He said that there were six cases filed against Rubel, including two murder cases with the police station, and they showed him arrested in four of the cases.
‘The investigation officer, however, sought his remand in the murder case of Chhatra Shibir leader Raihan Ali,’ he added.
Raihan Ali was the organising secretary of the Rajshahi city unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-islami.
Earlier on August 05, two students were killed and over two hundreds were injured after the police, AL, and JL activists had opened fire on the students’ procession in the Alupatti area in Rajshahi city.
During the attack, Rubel, close to AL presidium member and former Rajshahi City Corporation mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, was seen shooting at the students with pistols in his both hands.
Several video clips of Rubel’s shooting at the students went viral on social media.
