A human rights body Human Rights Support Society on Friday unveiled a list of martyrs revealing that 875 people were killed in the student-led mass uprising that brought Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic regime to an end.

The death toll covered the timeline between July 14 and September 9.


The Ganosamhati Andolan, a partner of the Ganatantra Mancha, on Friday also unveiled a list of murdered people in the movement.

The Ganatantra Mancha claimed that total 22 students and people were killed in Mohammadpur and Adabar areas in the Dhaka city during the movement.

Moreover, 227 people were wounded and two others were missing, the report of the party said.

Chief coordinator of the party, Zonayed Saki, called on the political parties to cooperate the interim government to help for making a complete list of people killed and wounded in the movement.

Chaired by organiser of Mohammadpur area of the party, Faiaz Firoz, the party executive coordinator, Abul Hassan Rubel, journalist Ashraf Kaisar, Ganosamhati central leader Monir Uddin Pappu, convener of Dhaka city north unit Monirul Huda Baban also spoke at a programme at Bengali Medium School in Mohammadpur.

The HRSS report said that they had made the list following the reports of 12 national dailies during the movement.

The HRSS in its report said that they identified 743 of the martyrs but the rest remained unidentified.

The deceased included 107 children, 51 members of the law enforcement agencies, six journalists and 13 girl children and women.

The HRSS revealed information on 619 of the deceased based on their age.

About 53 per cent of the deceased were above 50 years of age while 26 per cent aged between 31 and 50.

People aged between 30 and 19 years of age accounted for four per cent of the deceased.

By profession, the HRSS categorised 352 victims of the movement, revealing that 52 per cent were students, 20 per cent were workers, 12 per cent from were different professions, and 5 per cent were from law enforcement agencies.

An overwhelming 77 per cent or 599 of the victims died from bullet hit while 61 died from burn injuries and 85 people were beaten to death.

The HRSS had information on who were responsible for 542 of the murders.

The human rights body revealed that police killed 419 of those martyred while the other law enforcement agencies killed 45.

Awami League activists killed 45 people while 33 were killed in mob lynching, the report said. The Dhaka division accounted for 540 of the deaths while Barishal saw the lowest number of 13 deaths.

The highest number of 552 people was killed in August, with 548 of the murders occurring between August 4 and September 9. Â
