At least 12 Hindu people were injured at Kaliakair in Gazipur on Friday when they tried to prevent miscreants from vandalising a temple and grabbing its land.

In this regard, a local named Murad Hossain, 30, from Abdullahpur area under Lalpur in Natore, was detained and handed over to the police.


Protesting at the incident, around 200 Hindu people blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway for about an hour, causing huge traffic congestion on both sides of the highway.聽

People of the area said that a local named Lebu Mia, along with around 50 accomplices, attempted to occupy four decimals of land belonging to the Radhagavinda Loknath Temple at Safipur in the district, and vandalised the tin shed temple on Friday morning.聽

Upon receiving the information, members of the Hindu community went to the area and tried to prevent the miscreants from vandalising the temple, resulting in at least 12 people being injured, they added.聽

The temple鈥檚 convener, Koushik Adhikari, and its joint convener, Haripad Sarkar, said that the temple had been on the land for around 40 years.

In recent times, a group has conspired to grab the temple鈥檚 land by creating fake documents, and this group has attacked in the area multiple times in the past, they added.

Kaliakair police station inspector Torikul Islam said that the police visited the spot and brought the situation under control.

A legal action was underway in this regard, he added.
