A madrassah student was arrested and sent to jail on charge of vandalizing temples at Bagha upazila in Rajshahi on Friday.
The arrested is Rabbi Hossain, 18, son of Jamsed Ali of village Kaligram Miapara under Bagha upazila, and a student of a local qawmi madrasah, said police.
Abu Siddique, officer-in-charge of Bagha police station, said the villagers caught Rabbi red-handed while he was vandalising an idol at Kaligram Pundaripara Temple under Pakuria Union on Friday morning.
‘During the primary interrogation, Rabbi confessed that he had broken three temples out of his anger caused by several Facebook posts over the ongoing flash flood in Bangladesh due to the opening of several dams by India,’ he added.
The police official said that Rabbi was sent to jail through a court on Friday afternoon in a case filed by Kaligram Pundaripara Temple president Arun Sarkar on charge of vandalising the temple.
Suzit Kumar Panday, president of Bagha Upazila Puja Udjapon Committee, said, ‘Rabbi first broke the locks and vandalised various equipment at Palpara and Ghospara temples after the Fazr prayer. When Rabbi started vandalising an idol at Pundaripara temple, local people caught him red handed.’
