Advisor of the interim government for religious affairs AFM Khalid Hossain on Thursday warned against any communal disturbance urging people of all classes to maintain communal harmony in the country.

‘Maintain the communal harmony across the country. People, irrespective of religion and caste, have been living together in the country and cherishing communal harmony since ancient time,’ he said.

The adviser was addressing a views-exchange-meeting with the people of Hindus, Buddhists and Christians community at Chattogram Circuit House.

Noting that Bangladesh was a land of the people of all religion, AFM Khalid categorically said that members of Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist and Christian community had equal rights and everybody had freedom to practice religion.

Adviser Khalid warned that the government would not tolerate any kind of malicious interference against the religious coexistence.

He also said that the troublemakers and miscreants, taking advantage of slacking law and order in the changed situation following anti-discrimination student-public movement, unlashed many unlawful activities, including attacking, looting and setting fire on places of worship and houses of Hindus, Buddhists and Christians.

‘An exemplary punishment will be provided by bringing them under the law,’ he added.

The adviser called upon the leaders of Hindu, Buddhist and Christian community not to be afraid as the government would always remain beside them.

‘Administration is besides you . . . We will jointly resist the miscreants. You will perform your religious activities without any interruption,’ Khalid assured them during the meeting.

Earlier, the religious adviser also held a views-exchange-meeting with the local Islamic scholars, urging them to play a leading role in establishing peace and harmony in the country.
