The Bangladesh Rural Development Board held the 54th meeting of its board of directors at the BRDB conference room at Karwan Bazar in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Local government, rural development and cooperatives adviser AF Hassan Arif presided over the meeting, said a press release.
At the beginning of the meeting, a minute of silence was observed to pray for the eternal peace of the martyrs in the Student Movement Against Discrimination.
Praising the overall activities of the BRDB, Hasan Arif gave instructions to strengthen the research and development activities of the BRDB in rural development and poverty alleviation and to adopt new innovation activities in the future and to cover the marginal people of remote areas under the scope of services.
The main goal of the BRDB is to alleviate poverty, he said, mentioning, ‘What is being practiced in the BRDB in poverty alleviation needs to be accelerated. The NGOs or other organisations involved in microcredit efforts should work collaboratively with them as needed.’
He emphasised on setting a target to increase the BRDB’s contribution to the GDP from 1.93 per cent to 3-5 per cent and for this purpose, to adopt effective and result-oriented projects for livelihood development.
He also mentioned that there was a proposal to convert the BRDB from board to directorate. ‘If it becomes a directorate, the pros and cons have to be scrutinised. The problems that exist in the BRDB, including delay in getting pension, should be found out from this institution,’ he added.
