A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Wednesday placed Awami League organising secretary and former lawmaker Ahmed Hossain, and former chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority retired Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail on four-day remand in a case filed over the murder of grocery store owner Nabiul Talukdar in Paltan.

Metropolitan magistrate Jasim Uddin passed the order after the police produced them before the court seeking 10-day remand for interrogation in the case field with the Paltan police.


Mohammad Sohail, a former spokesperson for the Rapid Action Battalion, claimed in court that he was in Chittagong at the time of the incident and was not involved in the murder.

The remand petition alleges that the two suspects were involved in the murder of Nabiul Talukdar.

On Wednesday morning, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police announced the arrest of both individuals, mentioning that Ahmed Hossain was arrested from Rampura, and Mohammad Sohail from Banani on Tuesday night.

Besides, the controversial Awami League lawmaker of Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhia-Teknaf) constituency, Abdul Rahman Bodi was sent to jail on Wednesday.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Cox’s Bazar reported that senior judicial magistrate Hamimun Tamjid for Cox’s Bazar district court passed the order.

The Rapid Action Battalion in a press release said that Abdur Rahman Bodi was arrested from GEC Mor area of Chittagong city on Tuesday night.

The case investigation officer and Teknaf police inspector (investigation) Abdullah Al Mamun said that the court sent Bodi to prison in the case of attempted murder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Mohammad Abdullah.

‘Police will apply for his 10-day remand for further investigation.  The remand hearing is scheduled to be held later,’ he added.

Members of law enforcement agencies and army personnel, meanwhile, conducted a drive at the Banani office of former state minister for power and energy Nasrul Hamid early Wednesday and recovered around Tk 29 lakh.

They conducted the drive at Priyo Prangan on Road 17 of Kamal Ataturk Avenue in Banani and seized an electronic vault.

In the drive, Tk 3,08,700 was recovered from a drawer in the Finance and Accounts room of the Hamid Group’s office on the second floor of the Priyo Prangan building, another Tk 3,94,300 was found in a separate drawer, and another Tk 20,93,000 was found in the office. Some foreign currencies were also seized from the office.

On Tuesday, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit ordered the freezing of bank accounts linked to several prominent individuals, including former state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid and former Dhaka Metropolitan Police joint commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar.

The action came as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering and other financial irregularities.

The Anti-Corruption Commission, meanwhile on Wednesday, sent letters to the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit of Bangladesh Bank seeking information regarding eight people, including former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, over allegations of bribery.

The commission’s inquiry team led by deputy director Jahangir Alam sent letters to the financial intelligence unit seeking bank details of the eight people to facilitate inquiries against them, said a commission official.

The seven others are deputy inspector general of police Mollah Nazrul Islam, former additional secretary Harun-ur-Rashid Biswas, joint secretary Dhananjay Kumar Das, the former home minister’s son Safi Muddaser Khan, assistant private secretary Monir Hossain, public relations officer Sharif Mahmud Apu, and administrative officer Molla Ibrahim Hossain.

On August 15, the anti-corruption commission launched an inquiry against Asaduzzaman and the others over the allegations of taking crores of taka in bribes for transfers, promotions and recruitment in various departments under the home ministry.

According to the allegations, Asaduzzaman and his associates ran a syndicate that took the bribes which were collected from the police, the Department of Narcotics Control, and the fire service department.

Allegations ran that Harun played a key role in collecting the money and the Asaduzzaman-Harun syndicate embezzled thousands of crores of taka and smuggled the money out of the country.

A list of candidates used to be sent from the minister’s office to different departments under the home ministry after recruitment circulars, according to the allegations, that said that appointment as a superintendent of police required a bribe ranging from Tk 1 crore to Tk 3 crore.

On June 30, 2022, Molla Nazrul was appointed commissioner of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police, with the syndicate allegedly ensuring the appointment in exchange of Tk 5 crore.

On October 2, 2023, the fire service appointed 535 individuals, including 436 male firefighters, 15 female firefighters, and 84 drivers, following a list provided by the former minister’s office, the allegations recorded at the anti-corruption commission said.

A Brahmanbaria court placed former state minister for liberation war affairs AB Tajul Islam on nine-day remand in a murder case filed over the death of Chhatra Dal leader Rafiqul Islam Nayan.

Judge Sadekur Rahman passed the order after detectives produced Tajul at the Brahmanbaria Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in the afternoon, said Kamruzzaman Mamun, lawyer of the plaintiff.

On Tuesday, the police arrested Tajul from the capital’s Gulshan in a case filed over the killing of Nayan in Cumilla in November 2022.
