
Politicians, academics and professionals on Saturday at a roundtable discussion in Dhaka said that the main task of the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus would hold a free, fair and credible general election in the country within the shortest possible time.
For holding a credible general election, the interim government will need to reform the constitution and form a new Election Commission and for this the government would need some time, the speakers said, adding that political parties should give them that time for that.
National Council for Political Thoughts organised the roundtable titled ‘Interim government and aspirations of the people’ at the National Press Club where it president political scientist Abdul Latif Masum chaired.
Former bureaucrat and convener of Amar Bangladesh Party AFM Solaiman Chowdhury hoped that the newly formed interim government would be able to ensure good governance in the country and also able to hold a free, fair and credible general election bringing about required reforms within the shortest possible time.
The government would try the killers of students and people killed during the movement of the students against discrimination, Solaiman Chowdhury said.
Journalist Mostafa Kamal Majumder said that the interim government should hold a credible general election within the shortest possible time and hand over power to an elected government.
He hoped that the political parties would give time to the interim government for reforms of the constitution.
Rajshahi University teacher Tareq Fazal said that the interim government should take immediate steps for reforms of the constitution and bringing back former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to face the trials.
Chattogram University teacher Shafiqul Islam hoped that the interim government would be able to ensure good governance in the country.
Dhaka University teacher Zinnat Ara Naznin hoped that the victory of students would be successful after formation of an elected government in the country.
Bangladesh Agriculture University teacher Zakir Hossain, Islamic University teacher Fakhrul Islam, Dhaka University teacher Kazi Mahbubur Rahman, Dinajpur City mayor Syed Jahangir Hossain and others took part in the roundtable discussion.
Jagannath University teacher Mohammad Azam conducted the programme.
