An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the immediate past ruling party Awami League, was beaten to death allegedly for not paying the extortion money demanded from him in Gournadi upazila of Barishal.

The victim, identified as Rashed Sikder, 24, was the son of Kamal Sikdar of Bara Dulali village of Barthi union in the upazila.


Gournadi police officer-in-charge Anwar Hossain confirmed the incident on Saturday.

He said that the body was sent to Barishal Sher-E-Bangla Medical听Collage听Hospital for post-mortem and legal action was underway.

Based on the preliminary information acquired from the relatives, the officer said that Rashed lived in Dhaka and the incident happened on Friday night when he came to his village home.听

Local miscreants caught him and demanded extortion on Friday night and fatally injured hitting him on the head with a log as he had refused to give the money. 听

Relatives said that Rashed was rushed to the Gournadi Upazila Health Complex and from there to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. He was then shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition where he died early Saturday.

They also said that Rashed was a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist.

Victim鈥檚 father Kalam Sikder said that Rashed had been working in a plastic factory in Dhaka for long and came to visit their village home on Friday afternoon.

The family was preparing to file a murder case, the father said.
