The Rangpur central jail descended into chaos on Friday after a death row convict was killed leading to a clash between two groups of inmates.
The deceased was identified as Baharam Badsha, a death row convict. He was from Bakerbari area of Pirganj upazila in Bogura.
Confirming the clash, Rangpur deputy commissioner Mobasher Hasan said that a three-member committee was formed to investigate the incident.
Two prison guards named Motaleb and Shahjahan were suspended over the incident, he said.
According to jail sources, a fight broke out between Baharam and another inmate Rafiqul, also a death row convict, over picking fruit from a tree in the jail compound at about 8:00am, leading to Baharam鈥檚 getting fatally injured.
He was taken to Rangpur Medcial College Hospital where on-duty doctor declared him dead at about 12 noon.
The news of Baharam鈥檚 death sparked the clash between his followers and that of Rafiqul鈥檚, leaving over a dozen inmates injured and leading the prison guards to open fire to bring the situation under control.
The army and Rapid Action Battalion members were deployed following the incident.
