The High Court on Thursday asked the government to explain why the killings of children by gunshot from helicopters during the Student Movement Against Discrimination would not be investigated through an international commission.
The court fixed September 5 for holding further hearing of a writ petition filed by lawyer Taimur Alam Khandaker, seeking a directive to the government to pay Tk 1 crore as compensation for the families of 10 children as reported by a newspaper.
The bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Md Bazlur Rahman passed the order.
Taimur Alam told the court that innocent minors suffered bullet injuries while staying in rooftops, corridors of their home or near their buildings.
Mentioning the Article 32 of the constitution ‘No person shall be deprived of life or personal liberty saves in accordance with law’, he said that the state and its law enforcement agencies failed to protect their lives.
Taimur Alam Khandaker himself moved the petition while attorney general Md Asaduzzaman and deputy attorney general Redwan Ahmed Runjib represented the state.
