Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik on Sunday urged the new interim government to restore the law and order situation immediately and take initiatives to reform the state system.
Shujan came up with the call at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity.
Addressing the press conference, Shujan secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar said that those who committed injustice, criminal offences, and corruption in the financial sector in the past should be investigated and prosecuted.
He said, ‘We think that steps should be taken for reforms. We think that we have to build a new political settlement after talking to political parties and civil society, and the political parties have to formulate a civil charter.’
‘Unfortunately, our political parties do not keep their word. The Awami League in 2008 had called for a change, but they turned the law enforcement agencies into a party force,’ he added. ‘Corruption and malfeasance spread. But if this government takes the initiative to enact a citizenship charter, the activities of the past will not be repeated in the future,’ said.
Professor Robayet Ferdous said, ‘The mass uprising that we saw in 2024 was, at the same time, a social movement.’
At least 586 people gave their lives for the establishment of democracy, and so their sacrifice should not be forgotten, he said.
He also alleged that the representation of all sections of society was not ensured in the interim government.
Shujan central coordinator Dilip Kumar Sarkar mentioned in his keynote paper that the urgent tasks of the interim government would be to bring the law and order situation under control and make a list of victims of July-August violence.
He also urged the interim government to provide compensation to families, ensure proper treatment and subsequent rehabilitation of the injured people, protect religious institutions from attackers, promptly initiate an investigation under the United Nations to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
