Religious affairs ministry adviser of the newly formed interim government AFM Khalid Hossain said that the government is determined to act strictly against attack on religious minorities.

He said that a certain group of miscreants was creating chaos and instability by attacking temples, homes and business centres of religious minorities, looting them, and trying to destabilise the government.

‘Government will take strict legal action against those who engage in such misdeeds and try to destroy communal harmony,’ said Khalid.

He made the remarks at a press conference held at the BIAM Foundation in the capital on Saturday, after the formation of an interim government after a student-led mass upsurge forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to India where she has now taken shelter.

Condemning violence and attacks on minorities, he said that the interim government was committed to ensuring the safety of the lives, property and religious places of worship of the country’s people, especially minority communities.

Addressing questions from journalists, he said that restoration of law and order is a priority for the government.

‘I will go to the ministry and officially take the charge tomorrow,’ said the adviser, expressing that he would meet the victims in-person.

He also mentioned that he will take steps to enable a hotline number to take immediate action against attacks on religious minorities.

Khalid welcomed students and ordinary people for guarding the places of worship and homes of minorities at night as there were reports of attacks on them in different places.
