
The police on Friday attacked Ganatantra Mancha’s procession near the National Press Club, resulting in more than 25 leaders and activists of the parties injured.
Mancha, a combine of six political parties, organised a rally at Purana Paltan crossing in the morning, protesting against the killings in ‘complete shutdown’ programme of students, demanding reforms of quota system in government services.
The rally was followed by a procession that was attacked by the police.
Police lobbed sound grenade, teargas and charged baton to disburse the procession, causing more than 25 leaders and activists of the combine wounded.
The injured included Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, GanosamhtiAndolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki, Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum, and central leader Imran Emon.
Among the injured, Rafiqul Islam Bablu and Hasnat Quaiyum and Zonayed Saki were admitted to different city hospitals. Bablu was admitted with wound in head and he needed surgery.
Central leaders of Ganosamhati Andolan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the ruling Awami League activists, along with police, attacked Saki and beat him seriously. They used sticks, hockey sticks and locally made weapons in the attack.
Leaders of the combine Saiful Huq, Shahidulla Kaiser and Siraj Mia, among others, addressed the rally.
Contacted, Shahbagh police station inspector (operations) Md Arshad Hossain said that he was unaware about the attack.
