The Hindu Law Reform Council on Monday submitted a memorandum to the deputy leader of the national parliament Matia Chowdhury, demanding the reformation of the Hindu law.

Matia Chowdhury assured that she would discuss the establishment of equal rights of Hindu and Buddhist women in property with the prime minister Sheikh Hasina, said a press release issued on Monday.

She said this while the council members were handing over a memorandum with 11-point demands.

It was the inaugural day of the council’s programme of handing out memorandums to each of the 350 members of the parliament.

The memorandum said that it was necessary to amend the discriminatory Hindu law to ensure that no one would be left landless in the country.

The demands include establishment of equal inheritance right in property, mandatory registration of marital relations, establishment of equal guardianship of children and ensuring property rights to children with disabilities.

The memorandum was signed by the president of the organisation Moyna Talukder and its general secretary Pulack Ghatak.

The memorandum said that the current law was discriminatory and should be reformed immediately to uphold the dignity of the constitution.
