Public representatives of the local government under Jhenaidah-4 constituency on Saturday demanded punishment for those involved in the killing of Awami League lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar.

They made the demand at a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the capital.


At the programme, speakers said that they had taken to the streets to demand highest punishment for the killers of lawmaker Anwarul, who was murdered in West Bengal of India.

They said that those who brutally killed the lawmaker should be brought to justice soon.

The speakers also said that they had full trust in the country’s justice system and that the truth behind the murder would be revealed soon and justice would be ensured.

Leaders of the Kaliganj Upazila Awami League, chairmen and members of different unions, representatives at different levels in the constituency and MP Anwar’s youngest daughter Mumtarin Ferdous Dorin were present at the human chain.

Dorin said, ‘I have lost my father and can never get him back in my life.’

She questioned how people could kill a person in this brutal manner.

She demanded exemplary punishment for everyone involved in her father’s murder, including the mastermind and those who hid information.

They have received an official letter from the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department to go to Kolkata for a DNA sample, she said, adding that she would go to Kolkata with her uncle soon for the sample.

Lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar went to India for medical treatment on May 11 and went missing on May 14.

On May 22, Kolkata detectives confirmed that he was murdered.

The CID West Bengal recovered bones from a spot on the bank of a canal near Polerhat in North 24 Parganas about 15 kilometres away from the New Town apartment where Anar was reportedly murdered and his body was dismembered, according to Indian media reports.

On May 28, the Kolkata CID recovered four kilogrammes of flesh from a septic tank of Sanjeeva Garden in Kolkata.

Lawmaker Anwarul’s daughter Mumtarin Ferdous Dorin filed a case on May 22 with the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police, alleging that her father was abducted with the intent of murder.

Earlier on June 11, detectives detained Jhenaidah AL district unit general secretary Saidul Karim Mintu from the capital’s Dhanmondi area in connection with the case.

He was sent to jail following an eight-day remand in police custody.

On June 14, AL Jhenaidah district unit relief and social welfare secretary Qazi Kamal gave a confessional statement to a Dhaka court.

Earlier, Syed Amanullah Aman alias Shimul Bhuiyan, his associate Tanvir Bhuiyan, and Celesty Rahman gave confessional statements in the court.
