The 101th anniversary of the birth of Abul Hasnat Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, one of the four national leaders who were brutally assassinated inside Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975, was observed in Rajshahi on Wednesday.

Marking the day, different social, cultural and political organisations placed floral wreaths at his grave at Hetemkha area in Rajshahi city in the morning.


Rajshahi City Corporation organised a Hifzul Quran and recitation competition at the Nagar Bhaban.  Son of AHM Kamaruzzaman, AHM Khairuzzaman, the ruling Awami League presidium member and the RCC mayor, addressed it as chief guest.

Khairuzzaman Liton said that AHM Kamaruzzaman was a worker-friendly leader. ‘Party leaders and activists used to come to our house early in the morning to meet him. He had never lost any election in his 33-year long political career,’ he said.

Khairuzzaman said that after the independence of the country, under the instructions of the founding president of the country Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, AHM Kamaruzzaman started the work of building the country with wisdom and talent.

‘A museum will be constructed at the tomb of Shaheed Kamaruzzaman in Rajshahi. With this, the memory of the Liberation War will be preserved and his contribution will be presented to the new generation,’ he added.

Shahid AHM Kamaruzzaman Government Degree College also organised a programme where students were felicitated for their outstanding performances in their examinations.

Born on June 26, 1923 at Nurpur village, Bagatipara in Natore, AHM Kamaruzzaman obtained his graduation in economics from Presidency College, Calcutta in 1946 and LLB degree from Rajshahi University in 1956.

He was elected the secretary of Nikhil Banga Muslim Chhatra League of Rajshahi district in 1942 and was its vice-president from 1943 to 1945.

He then joined the Awami League in 1957 and was elected the general secretary of the AL Rajshahi district in 1957. He was also elected a member of Jatiya Parishad in 1962 and 1966.

In 1967 he was elected the deputy leader of the Opposition and the general secretary of Nikhil Pakistan Awami League.

He played a vital role in forming the Mujibnagar Government during the War of Independence as the minister of home, agriculture, relief and rehabilitation. AHM Kamaruzzaman was elected the president of Bangladesh Awami League, and was given the charge of the ministry of industries in 1975.
