Industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Thursday told the Jatiya Sangsad that the number of closed state-owned industries in the country, run under the ministry of industries, is 397.
The minister gave this information in response to the question of Awami League lawmaker Nurunnabi Chowdhury.
Highlighting the information on the closed factories, the minister said that there are 382 sick/closed factories under the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation, five closed factories under the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation, six sugar mills under the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation and four closed factories under the control of Bangladesh Steel And Engineering Corporation.
In response to a question from independent lawmaker Abdul Quader Azad, the minister said that the government has taken various steps from 2009-2023 to make international and multinational companies interested in investing in Bangladesh and there have been successes.
He said that in the financial year 2023-24, 10 projects of BSCIC, including five industrial cities and three industrial parks, are under implementation.
‘If the projects are implemented, a potential of 3,565 industrial units will be set up in 3,811 industrial plots,’ he said.
The minister said that 167 industrial plots have been allocated by BSCIC in favour of 122 industrial establishments in order to encourage investment.
