The Dhaka Metropolitan Police detective branch chief Harun-or-Rashid said that the detective team that went to Kolkata on May 26 gathered crucial evidence and hoped that the motive of the murder of Jhenaidah-4 constituency lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar would be revealed soon.

Harun-or-Rashid came up with this information at a press briefing at Hazarat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital after the team led by him had returned from Kolkata on Thursday afternoon.

‘The DB team coordinated with the Kolkata police and recovered some leading evidence and digital data from the scene and its surrounding areas,’ he said.

The investigation team also included Muhammad Abdul Ahad, deputy commissioner (Wari Division), and Shahidur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner.

Earlier, Indian daily Anandabazar Patrika reported that the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department planned to visit Nepal to determine the whereabouts of Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen, the alleged mastermind of the murder.

Shaheen is believed to have now flown to the USA via Nepal and Dubai.

Siam, another accused in the murder, was currently in Nepal and was under surveillance, according to the Anandabazar report.

DB Harun said that the Kolkata police had applied to the authorities in the United States and Nepal for the arrest of the two.

Anandabazar also reported that the Kolkata CID issued a ‘lookout notice’ against four people, including Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen.

Referring to the reported recovery of the MP’s body parts, DB chief Harun-or-Rashid said that the recovered body parts were believed to be of the murdered Anwarul but it would be confirmed after the DNA and forensic tests.

Bangladesh detectives requested the Indian authorities to send the forensic and DNA test reports of the recovered body parts as soon as possible, he said.

He also revealed, ‘We spoke with Anwarul’s daughter, Mumtarin Ferdous Dorin. She already had applied for the visa and would soon go to India for the DNA test.’

On Tuesday night, the CID of the Kolkata police recovered some human body parts from the sewerage line of a New Town flat at Sanjiva Garden where ruling Awami League lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar was allegedly killed.

It was reported that the police recovered some hair, bone and flesh from the sewerage line of Sanjiva Garden.

Four people have been arrested so far in Bangladesh and one in India in the Anwarul murder incident.

Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul went to India for medical treatment on May 11 and remained missing since May 14.

On May 22, Kolkata detectives confirmed that Bangladeshi lawmaker was murdered.
