Bangladesh Bank employees have expressed their discontent over governor Abdur Rouf Talukder's actions that have led to a reduction in their various benefits.
The Bangladesh Bank Officers’ Welfare Council issued a letter to its members on Sunday highlighting their grievances and calling for a meeting to discuss the issue today.
The letter states, ‘While different government departments, agencies, and forces have seen an increase in promotions and benefits recently, the benefits for the officers of Bangladesh Bank have been decreasing or cut, leading to growing dissatisfaction and frustration among its officers.’
After assuming office, governor Abdur Rouf Talukder had announced his vision to establish Bangladesh Bank as an ideal regulatory body.
However, several benefits previously enjoyed by the employees have been reduced or canceled in recent times. These include the 1.5 basic salary equivalent recreational allowance, an additional increment based on foundation training results, allowances for officers serving as faculty members at the Training Academy, and special foreign training facilities for the officers involved in foundation training.
‘Such reductions undoubtedly demotivate officers and are inconsistent with the governor’s stated vision,’ said the letter.
Grade 5 employees in other government agencies, such as the administration cadre, armed forces, and equivalent rank officers at MRA, Titas Gas, PKSF, and others, receive vehicle maintenance allowances or full-time vehicle use benefits.
Unfortunately, grade 5 officers of Bangladesh Bank are deprived of this benefit, affecting their social and institutional status, it said.
BB spokesperson Mezbaul Haque did not respond to requests for his comment in this regard.
A welfare council member told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the association had urged the governor several times to resolve these issues. However, the governor has not taken any effective steps regarding the matter. Therefore, the council has called a meeting to discuss the issue and determine the next steps.
Recently, 57 officials have resigned from Bangladesh Bank, apparently for better career prospects, especially in the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS).
Additionally, many employees go abroad for study but they choose not to return.
BB officers said that the reasons for the resignations include dissatisfaction with the lack of autonomy at the central bank and the reduction of job benefits.
